Opening of Qingdao Frozen Food Plant

Neu-Isenburg, Germany / Qingdao, China — Today, LSG Sky Chefs, the world’s largest provider of in-flight services, officially opened a new plant in Qingdao, Northeast of China, with the attendance of senior representatives from the regional and city authorities.

The facility is the first frozen-food plant in Asia dedicated to airline catering. It was built in response to the increasing demand for this convenient and high-quality type of food in the Asia/Pacific region. Qingdao, a fast-growing manufacturing center, offers huge advantages in logistics as it has one of China’s largest seaports and a growing international airport (TAO).

With a surface of 10,500 sqm (about 34,448 feet), the facility is the largest frozen food plant in LSG Sky Chefs network. Its annual capacity peaks at 25 million frozen meals or 100,000 per day. It also includes a full Halal kitchen and production area.

“Presently we are involved in 16 facilities and more than a dozen joint ventures throughout China, all of which are excellent examples of true win-win situations,” said Walter Gehl, CEO of LSG Lufthansa Service Holding AG, during the opening ceremony. “Building this plant has been an outstanding experience that once again confirms the great relationships that we have cultivated in China.”
